Siouxland Libraries and the economic crisis

It seems there is a bright spot for the Sioux Falls area, despite the economic crisis. Despite previous reports from the Argus Leader, the local Sioux Falls newspaper, the 2012 budget for Siouxland Libraries looks great:
Sioux Falls is facing some major budget cuts around the board because of the economy. But the public library system is valued because of the positive effect it has. Especially when considering the economy. Siouxland Libraries' numbers continue to grow with harder times. Patrons need what libraries offer. Demands will continue to grow for free internet access, free entertainment, job skills seminars, etc. It is good to see that the Sioux Falls area recognizes this and continues to support it!

Impacts of the Economic Crisis on the Status of the Profession

Working in the education field, and being a native of Michigan, I have been amazed at the blatant teacher bashing that has occurred since the election of Rick Snyder.  The corollary to this is, of course, the anti public employee sentiment that has also occurred.  In an article in the School Library Journal, Lauren Barack reports on the sad situation facing the Dearborn Public School System:

"Before a budget crisis hit neighboring Dearborn Public Schools in the 2009/2010 school year, every K-12 school had at least one half-time certified media specialist, says a Dearborn staff person who also requested anonymity. Now, 32 buildings in that district share about eight librarians, the staff source says."(Barack, 2001)

Barack further points out that many districts are choosing to place para-professionals in the school libraries to save money.
